Delano Varner

Deno Varner likes to tell people that his work is the first thing they see when they leave the airport. As a grounds maintenance worker, he takes care of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’s beautiful campus, including the landscaping around UNLV’s signage by the airport, on the corner of Tropicana and Paradise Rd.
“We make UNLV the world class institution that it is. When people come to check it out, they see the beauty that we put into the campus. And people want to come study here, they want to come work here,” said Dino.
Dino also serves as a union steward for his coworkers at UNLV, because he believes all workers desesrve dignity and respect on the job.
“I became a union steward because no one was fighting for us at UNLV. People trust that I can handle business as a steward and help protect their rights as workers. But that’s why having a strong union is important – we have to fight for each other,” said Dino.
